In more technical parlance, it’s an abstraction of a communication endpoint that allows your program to talk with other programs, usually across a network.

In the realm of TCP/IP (which we’re primarily dealing with here), every single connection is uniquely identified by a combination of four elements:

  1. Local IP Address
  2. Local Port
  3. Foreign IP Address
  4. Foreign Port

This quartet is commonly termed a TCP socket pair. If you picture this like a postal system, the local IP and port would be your home address, while the foreign IP and port would be the destination you’re sending mail to (or receiving from). The term “socket” often refers to the combination of an IP address and a port, marking one end of the connection.

For instance, given the example socket pair {10.10.10.2:49152, 12.12.12.3:8888}, the first set {10.10.10.2:49152} identifies one endpoint (like a client), and the second set {12.12.12.3:8888} identifies the other endpoint (such as a server). These sockets facilitate the unique identification of both ends in a communication link.

The Socket Life Cycle in a Server Context

Going back to our simple HTTP server in the previous article, we can observe that a socket goes through the following life cycle:

1. Creation: The server initiates a TCP/IP socket.

During this phase, the operating system keeps track of incoming connection requests for that specific socket. 5. Accept & Communicate: The server then awaits incoming client connections. Once a client connects, communication ensues - data can be exchanged back and forth. After the communication ends, the connection is closed and the server is ready to accept another client.

To understand what File Descriptors are, we need to look a little bit further into the UNIX-like operating systems (which includes Linux and macOS).

There’s a foundational principle here: everything is a file. This philosophy doesn’t just extend to what we traditionally think of as files (like documents or images) but also to hardware devices and sockets. Every “file” is blessed with a unique, non-negative integer by the operating system upon its creation, called the File Descriptor. In Python, when you create a socket, you’re handed back a socket object. But behind the scenes, in the OS, that socket is represented and managed as a file descriptor. When you’re reading from or writing to a socket, at the lowest levels, you’re performing operations on a file descriptor.

Into Uncharted Territory: Socket Interactions in the OS

So far, we’ve journeyed through the socket’s lifecycle and touched on the UNIX philosophy linking sockets and files. Yet, I find myself pondering deeper questions: What truly happens when a socket “listens”? How does our system keep tabs on those elusive network packets? I must admit, this delves far from my usual area of knowledge. What I present here is an accumulation of information I’ve pieced together, hoping to shed some light on these intriguing topics. Together, let’s navigate this uncharted territory and unearth the intricacies of system-managed sockets.

When a socket is in the listening state, it isn’t actively “doing” anything in the sense of running a loop or continuously executing code in your program. Instead, the operating system is maintaining the state for this socket in the background.

On a low level, the network interface (like an Ethernet port or a wireless adapter) continuously listens to the network’s electrical signals (or wireless signals). These signals are converted into data packets by the network interface. Each packet contains information about its intended destination (among other things). The operating system’s network stack examines these packets to determine where they should go.

Now, let’s get into the system’s internals:

1. Interrupt-driven I/O: When new data arrives at the network interface, it generates an interrupt. An interrupt is a signal to the processor that it should momentarily “pause” what it’s doing and attend to this new task. In this case, the task is processing the newly arrived data packet.

2. Demultiplexing: The operating system’s network stack will look at the packet’s destination information (IP address and port number) and match it to the appropriate socket. This process is known as demultiplexing. If the socket is in a listening state and waiting for incoming connections, the OS will add this connection request to the socket’s queue.

3. Handling Connections: When your program calls accept() on a listening socket, it’s essentially asking the OS: “Do I have any pending connection requests in my queue?” If there are any, accept() will return a new socket specifically for that connection. This allows the server to communicate with the newly connected client while still listening for other incoming connection requests on the original socket.

In the case of a busy server, the OS might be processing and demultiplexing a large number of packets, queuing up connection requests for the server to accept(), and routing data to the correct application processes all at the same time.

4. No Busy-Waiting: You might wonder, doesn’t this mean the CPU is endlessly running a loop, checking for new data? Not really. Modern OSes use a mechanism where the CPU is interrupted by the hardware only when new data arrives, rather than constantly polling or “busy-waiting” for data. This is much more efficient.

Your application, using high-level socket APIs, doesn’t need to worry about these low-level details. The OS handles the complex tasks of managing the network stack, processing interrupts, demultiplexing packets, and managing socket queues. However, understanding this gives a better appreciation of what’s happening under the hood when your server application “listens” on a socket and “accepts” new connections.
